Breast Reduction Information
Breast reduction involves removing excess skin and
underlying breast tissue in order to reduce its size and reshape the
contour. Women wanting breast reduction have breasts that are
disproportionately large and sagging. It can reduce back, neck and
shoulder pain and correct breathing difficulties. Many women are also
self-conscious about the way they look and this procedure can balance
their body proportions and improve their self-confidence.
How is a Breast Reduction Performed?
Breast
reduction is a procedure where excess breast tissue, fat, and skin are
removed. The nipple and areola are lifted, and the skin that was
located above the nipple is brought down, pulled together and sutured
to improve the shape and contour.
How Will I Feel Post-op?
Bandages
will be removed after the first week. Most of the bruising and swelling
will go down after two weeks and light activity can resume. It will
take a few months for your breasts to take a more natural shape.
Scarring will fade over time and will be hidden under the bra.
What are the Risks and Benefits?
Although
uncommon, some patients experience bleeding, infection, uneven nipples
or a reaction to the anaesthetic. However, most patients find that the
potential benefits of breast reduction; less physical pain, better
fitting clothing, and more confidence; outweigh the risks associated
with the surgery.
Am I a Candidate for Breast Reduction?
Women
with very large breasts that cause physical discomfort are the best
candidates for breast reduction surgery. Male breast reduction surgery
may be performed on men who suffer from a condition known as
gynecomastia, an abnormal enlargement of the breasts.
Does My Health Insurance Cover Breast Reduction?
Health
insurance will often pay for this surgery, but most patients need to
have documented pain with removal of over a pound from each breast to
be approved. Women who have less than a DD or DDD cup size usually
don't get insurance coverage.
What Are the Long Term Effects?
It
will take six months to a year for your breasts to settle. But
afterwards, your breast will be smaller and lighter. The physical
discomfort you felt before will disappear and you find you will be able
to do more activities, your clothes will fit you better and you will
look better proportioned. This type of surgery carries the highest
incidence of satisfied customers.
